| Many people comment on our office, and we're always pleased to show it off to the public. Built in 1905, the house was a dwelling for over 80 years, until Jim Ross purchased it in 1989 and renovated it into an attractive place of business. The original character and history of the three-storey Victorian-style house has been maintained and restored. |

A search of the history of the property shows the original title in the name of Queen Victoria. In the late 1800's, rancher George Lane bought the land as part of a larger parcel which included what is now George Lane Memorial Park. He subdivided the lots which the house sits on, and in 1905 a local builder bought them for $550 and built the home. It originally sold for $4,000 in April 1906 to its first owner Richard Wallace. Wallace was a local rancher who became the first president of the High River Agricultural Society. He served on the North West Council from 1889 to 1893 as well as in the Legislative Assembly from 1899 to 1904 and was mayor of High River from 1911 to 1913. He owned the home for 12 years…Hence the name "The Wallace House".
Over the years different families owned the property, including the Holmes' of High River. During the Second World War, the attic was used to billet young pilots learning to fly at the local air base.
In 1999, a major addition onto the back of the house made for a significant change, but it also firmly established the building as a downtown office and extended its life by substantially improving the usefulness of the property.
We take pride in the maintaining the historic "Wallace House" as our office. |
